Prayer

Lord, I am not smart enough, strong enough, or spiritual enough to do this on my own. Walk with me. Guide me. Help me do your will, and let mine cease. This is not my problem God. I give it to you. You take care of it. Amen.

How do I use Mozy?

mozy logo

Seriously, I love this service.

MozyHome is the best deal at $50 per year (or $5/month) for an UNLIMITED amount of data backup.

This is a per computer license. However, my setup allows me to backup every document, from every computer we own using one license.

Basically we have a headless (no monitor) computer sitting in a corner hooked up to the network.

This computer acts as a file server for us and we store all of our files on it. Then Mozy backs them all up.

My wife and I both have laptops, and we make sure not to store any data on them, but to save everything to the server.

Mozy just runs, and backs everything up we have. Currently my MozyHome account is holding 250 gigabytes of files.

Awesome Features of Mozy

Backing up an indefinite amount of data for only $50 per year is pretty awesome, but there is more.

1) Mozy is the fastest backup I’ve ever seen.

The initial backup of ALL your data is going to take a while. Everything depends on how much data you have. My first, initial backup took almost 5 full days of running. Yes, 120 hours of constant uploading. But, I was also backing up triple digit gigabytes of information.

After your initial backup, Mozy is insanely fast. The software does incremental backups, which means they only backup the parts of files that have changed, and new files.

2) Multiple Backups per Day

This is another feature I absolutely adore. You can set the Mozy software to backup when your computer is idle, so every coffee break becomes a save point for all your work throughout the day. Or, you can also click the “Backup Files” button any time during the day.

For example: when I start a new website project, after I get an hour or so into the the project, I’ll tell Mozy to backup everything so I don’t lose my work.

3) Restore files from 30 days ago & from any time of the day

Mozy only charges you $50 for a year to backup everything.

You can’t even buy a 500 gig hard drive for that right now.

But on top of that, they keep your files for 30 days.

So if you delete a file off your computer, Mozy won’t delete it until 30 days later. If you decide you needed that file after all, just restore it and you’re back in business.

Another of my favorite features ties into the fact that Mozy can backup several times during the day.

You can restore from ANY of restore point throughout the day.

Best Example: I start a web design project. An hour into the project I back up all my files. Two hours later, I completely screw up a file, or delete something, and I can’t undo it. All I have to do is restore the file from earlier that same day, and I’m up and running again. Awesome!

4) Easiest Restore Option & “Restore” files from Anywhere!

To restore a file, all you have to do is right click inside the folder the file was in, select from your Context Menu “Restore Files Here” and you’ll see Mozy’s backed up version of that folder in a new window. Just select the file you want to restore.

You can also do the same thing through the installed software on your machine, OR you can do it all online!

You can use Mozy to “restore” files from anywhere in the world to any computer in the world.

For Example: If I’m across the world on a foreign computer, instead of having to carry all my files on a thumb drive, if I need a file, I can use the online portal to see all my files and choose which ones I want to download. Mozy takes a few minutes but will send me an email, and I can download any and all files I want.

This is an incredibly useful feature!

One Man Garage Videos – 3/4 Ton Truck Work

I’ve written several posts about my two 78 Silverado trucks I want to work on.

  1. Epic Chevy .com and my 1978 Silverado Restoration
  2. 1978 Silverado Restore Illustrated – Final Rendering
  3. Up Front Emotion

This is my 3/4 Ton 1978 Silverado truck.

It’s got a 350 engine in it and a 4 speed manual, with granny low.

1978 Silverado 3/4 Ton

This truck will never be a show truck, but I bought it for only $400 and drove it home. Hard to beat that.

My goal with this truck is to practice on it first, before I tear into my other 78 Silverado (1/2 ton) that’s in really good shape.

1978 Silverado and Engine Stand

My Plan “One Man Garage” Video Plan:

I am new to doing all my own work on my trucks, but I am trying to teach myself through books and the internet.

My end goal is to be capable of doing everything on my truck from bumper to bumper and tires to cab top.

Most guys that work on their stuff are like me, alone in their efforts.

So a buddy of mine and I came up with the idea to film me working on the trucks and showing how one guy can do all of the work himself.

My Plan for the 3/4 Ton Truck:

I received unanimous feedback from the 67-72chevytruck.com forum members that I should start working on the 3/4 ton truck before tearing into the much nicer 1/2 ton (they are both 1978 Silverados).

The 3/4 ton is currently stored at a buddy’s house, but as soon as our 1992 Lumina sells, the truck will be coming home.

  1. Remove the hood (film – One Man Garage: Use an i hook in the ceiling to support the hood)
  2. Remove the engine & transmission (film – One Man Garage: use cherry picker a.k.a. Engine Hoist pictured above)
  3. Remove the front clip (fenders, grill and while assembly)
  4. Remove the bed (film – One Man Garage: Use the “one man lift” either Wood Version or Metal Version)
  5. Remove the cab (film – One Man Garage: Use the “one man lift” & a “tip and flip” dolly)
  6. Remove all the remaining components from the frame
  7. Sand Blast all the components
  8. POR15 the frame
  9. Paint all sheet metal using the $50 Rustoleum Paint Job method
  10. Rebuild the motor
  11. Rebuild the transmission
  12. Replace necessary components: breaks, lines, etc…
  13. Replace all bushings with the Energy Suspension Polyurethane Master Kit ($200)
  14. Build a metal framed flat bed with a wood floor
  15. Put the thing back together and drive it! :-)

Build a Rocket Stove

Rocket Stove Design

Lifehacker.com introduced me to IWillTry.org and the article about Building a Rocket Stove for Home Heating.

I was looking into propane heaters to heat my garage this winter for around $100.

Propane was going to be my preference based on Kerosene & Diesel heaters being far more harmful to breath in, and the idea of being able to easily remove the fuel source from the heater (just unhook the propane tank) versus having to leave kerosene or diesel inside the heater seemed far safer.

Dyna-Glo Propane Heater

However, after seeing a pretty cool video How To Build a Rocket Stove, I think I can tackle building one.

My Requirements:

  1. An inexpensive heater to warm my 2 car garage
  2. An inexpensive and easily available fuel source
  3. A portable heater to allow me to move it around the garage, or even outside

My Plan:

  1. Build a very simple Rocket Stove based on the design in the video above
  2. Use firebricks I can find instead of making my own like the video suggests (I don’t have a kiln!)
  3. Wrap the bricks in regular sheet metal like the video shows
  4. Light a fire in it and see if it burns correctly with just the bricks

If this all works, and the firebricks will serve the purpose then:

  1. Fill the sheet metal surround with Cob (a mixture of sawdust and clay that is used as insulation by a lot of these Rocket Stove people)
  2. Fabricate an exhaust system that will heat the cob and exhaust like the IWillTry.org design
  3. Build a base with rollers and/or handles to make it easily movable

My Point:

The necessity of the cob is that the rocket stove will heat up very quickly, but also cool down very quickly.

The cob absorbs, traps, and holds the heat very well which allows the rocket stove to warm it up, and then the cob radiates heat for quite a while even after the fire has gone out.

IWillTry.org points out that his room heats up fast and cools down fast because of the lack of an insulator on his Rocket Stove.

If this works I will have a dirt cheap heater for keeping me warm in my garage so I can work on my truck year round. If it burns clean enough then I might even be able to open the door to the house and heat it a little as well.

Goog 411 is Gone. Google Voice is Staying Forever.

Google 411

If you missed the announcement Google made that it was killing Goog 411, the free information service, then you have not yet had a chance to grieve.

The good news is two fold.

First, you can still text GOOGLE (466459) and get business information back.

Second, I seriously doubt Google will ever kill Google Voice.

Think about this, unless you’re talking to someone in person, Google will know everything going on in your life. Email, Voicemail (which is now transcribed into text thanks to Google Voice), Text Messages, Phone Conversations (surely they are saving these as text as well), etc… Google will know everything.

If they eventually add voice monitoring to register the pitch, cadence, and tone of your voices as well (if they haven’t already) then Google might be able to know things before you do based on stress, excitement or just biology…

Couldn’t you foresee your stress levels going up, or a woman’s voice changing due to hormones, and Google sends them an ad before the person even knows something has changed…? Wicked! :-)

Google CEO Eric Schmidt even told the Mobile World Congress in a keynote address: “We can literally know everything if we want to.”

Luckily their company slogan is “Don’t Be Evil” and they have stood up to that so far.

In a hilarious hkcd cartoon, you can even seen that Google has almost no reason to turn evil…
