Amazing Sub $300 Dell Desktop

Dell Vostro Desktop

Normally I never pay any attention to the spam messages I get from companies.

But Dell just sent out an email featuring a less than $300 Desktop complete with 19 inch monitor, 3 GIG of ram (WOW!) and a 250 gig hard drive.

This is a heck of a deal.

Check it out Here.

Home Inventory from Apartment Therapy

Lifehacker.com just introduced me to the website www.ApartmentTherapy.com who wrote a great article:

How To Make an Inventory of Your Home… And Use It to Declutter

I am a huge fan of minimalism and bucking the “buying” trend of America.

While our home currently have little excess there are two old CRT monitors in the attic, some old computer equipment, and several stacks of books that will soon have their inventory tags marked as “outgoing!”

Update 9-3-2010: Just wanted to say that I did get rid of all of those things. And I’m getting ready to have some more outgoing. One awesome thing is that I have donated over 1,000 books to the Daniel Boone Regional Library over the past 5 years. It’s a great tax deduction, and you do something great for the community.

Google is the new Microsoft in Anti-Trust

Google. The G-word to Microsoft.

They are getting bigger every year, and people are going to have a problem with that.

The New York Times, a small paper publication, just wrote an article stating:

“Everyone Loves Google, Until It’s Too Big”

How will they split up Google like they did Microsoft?

Will great products like G-Mail, G-Calendar, G-Reader, and many, many, many, many, many (3 hours later) many more be impossible after a split?

I understand the need for competition, and completely support the desire to keep the market fair.

I only worry that a great company could be hurt (read punished) for doing such a wonderful job.

We’ll see what is to come.

InformationWeek Helps You Pick a Linux

Yesterday InformationWeek talked about Cooling and Quieting Classrooms with Linux.

Today they tackled the ever present discussion:

Which Linux Distribution do I use?

Note: if the above page looks strange when loaded it’s due to my post How to Read Online Without Distraction where I share how I read articles online using the “print” view. In most browsers you can increase the size of the text to reduce eye-strain and the print view gives you much more screen area to do this.

The car metaphor works great here, there is no one Car, just like there are many distributions of Linux.

Choosing which one to tackle the installation of on your machine is always tricky.

InformationWeek touches on the big players including a big, little player and one of my favories, D**n Small Linux.

Recently I setup a dual boot on my laptop to run Ubuntu.
Unfortunately, every time I come to the GRUB boot loader (how you choose which operating system to start up) Windows keeps getting selected. However, I’ve been trying to set aside some time when deadlines are not so critical to start working on the Linux partitioned space.

Good Luck.

Tux is Cold and Quiet in Classrooms

InformationWeek is both a great weekly publication and a phenomenal online resource.

A few years ago I started receiving their magazine quite by accident.

When I first opened the pages, I didn’t understand a word of what they were talking about:

  • Large scale server farms
  • Enterprise level IT
  • Fortune 500 Companies
  • And WAY more that was beyond my experience level…

Now I tear though the pages with ease and read every issue cover to cover.

Today I received their email newsletter and an article about Linux in the Classroom piqued my interest.

Linux, nComputing, And Overheated Classrooms.

Hooray for Tux!

It’s no secret I’m an OpenSource nut, and am working my way toward being a Linux geek.

Enjoy the read.

There Can Only Be One!

Finally! A good idea from the Cell Phone industry.

Cell Phones are to have only ONE standard charger, no matter who the phone manufacturer is.
