David Heinemeier Hansson sounds like Timothy Ferriss

Timothy Ferriss and David Heinemeier Hansson

37 Signals partner David Heinemeier Hansson shared his insights at the Startup School explaining The secret to making money online. This was a great video presentation anyone who already owns, or wants to own, a business should watch.

If you’ve read Timothy Ferriss’ book The Four Hour Work Week then you will be familiar with his ideas of:

  • The New Rich
  • Niche Marketing
  • Product Creation for Demand
  • Automation

How does Hansson sound like Ferriss? Watch the video and you’ll see.

  • “I think $1 million is still a lot of money” – the New Rich don’t need millions to live the life they want
  • Fortune 5,000,000 – niche marketing will get you enough customers to live
  • The Italian Restaurant Theory – you don’t have to be the best, you just have to be good enough to make a living
  • It isn’t “rocket surgery” – don’t work for works sake. It does not take genius to run a business, just motivation.

The longer Hansson spoke the more he reminded me of Ferriss’ book. Both are saying nearly the same thing but they are both very different individuals. The 37 Signals blog is a great read, and Ferriss’ book is the only I’ve read more than twice.

Two Prophets, One Message

  • You don’t need millions of dollars in the bank to live like a millionaire. The most powerful currency you possess is your time. Start a side business, or leave your 9-5 grind for good. Whatever you do: Don’t stay in a place that lacks fulfillment and purpose. Don’t kill yourself with crazy hours while life passes you by. Don’t think you cannot enjoy life because of bills. Don’t talk yourself out of working for yourself.
  • There are more than Six Billion ( 6,000,000,000 ) people on this planet. They all need to purchase stuff and services. Find a small group of them and satisfy their needs. Don’t create something and then hope they will come, you’re no Kevin Costner. Lucky for you, you don’t have to be! Anyone can start a business. I just shared the story for a 20 year old who started a sewing business in high school.
  • Stop working for work’s sake. Take control of your time and become rich. Automate your life after Eliminating as much as possible. Enjoy the richest currency of time.

Etsy.com – Buy and Sell Handmade Items

Etsy Logo

YoungEntrepreneur.com did a recent Profile on a, go figure,
young entrepreneur who sold her handmade crafts online.

The article mentioned Etsy.com, a website to “buy and sell all things handmade,” which I had never heard of before then.

How does Etsy compared to eBay?
Jenna Lou Dauer’s, the young entrepreneur, response was:

“People go to eBay to get something cheap and quick. And eBay’s listing and selling fees are ridiculous. You can’t compete with cheap imports. With Etsy, people are going there because they want to have a connection with who made what they’re buying. They’re willing to pay a little more for something they know is handmade.”

I love seeing young people starting businesses and making it in this world.
Not only is this an interesting young woman, but I thought many people might also be interested in this website focused on handmade items.

Convert Anything at Media-Convert.com

A friend emailed me a Photoshop File (PSD) a few days ago to review.
I was away from my personal machine, but I did not need to edit the file.
So I turned to trusty Google who fed me up Media-Convert.com

This handy website will convert almost any file into almost any other file.
The site is incredibly simple: Navigate to the file on you local machine,
choose the Output File and click OK.

I changed my PDF into a JPG and viewed it on the machine I was at,
emailed back my friend saying it was fine, and I was done!

Thank You Media-Convert.

Here is a complete list of possible Output Files:

Happiness is a Lie, Money will make me happy. Backwards

Digg just served this up to my viewer and I was horrified,
until it was Reversed.

Bottom line, right now I see people treating work as more important than family.
Bottom line, I don’t want to be like this.
Bottom line, I cannot stand the way we treat our habitat and want to change things.
Bottom line, Change is Hard, and It’s up to US. Now.

I realize this may be a shock but
“Happiness comes from within”
is a lie, and
“Money will make me happy”
So in 30 years I will tell my children
they are not the most important thing in my life.
My employer will know that
I have my priorities straight because
work
is more important than
family
I tell you this
Once upon a time
Families stayed together
but this will not be true in my era
this is a quick fix society
Experts tell me
30 years from now I will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of my divorce
I do not concede that I will live in a country of my own making
In the future
Environmental destruction will be the norm
No long can it be said that
My peers and I care about this earth
It will be evident that
My generation is apathetic and lethargic
It is foolish to presume that
There is hope.

And all of this will come true unless we choose to reverse it.

The Internet is Dead. WHAT?!

My San Antonio Logo

The Internet is dead. It’s had its time; say goodbye,” said Cuban, who helped launched HDNet in 2001 and remains its chairman.

He had a great idea, launched a renowned website, HDNet, and now says the internet is dead. Don’t Drink Antifreeze!

This is one of the most asinine things I’ve read in years. Before I read more than a paragraph into this article I had triple checked the time stamp thinking it was from 2000.

Seeing it was in fact 2008, I kept reading. Only to have my jaw fall farther.

[Cuban] bolstered his claim by saying the Internet and popular sites such as YouTube can’t provide high-definition programming like cable and can’t offer the interactivity that cable programmers can. High-definition television screens are large enough to give viewers more options that will allow them to use the television like a personal computer desktop…

I’m sure this billionaire can afford to have a HD TV in his office for a computer, and put one on the desk of every office worker, but I know the majority cannot.

Not to mention, I cannot foresee ever surfing the web, or doing serious computer work on my television in the middle of the living room. If you have a normal setup then your sitting area is at least 6 feet from your screen, and text from a normal document or web page is nearly illegible at that distance.

Internet TV never exploded or took off. The setup boxes with their wireless keyboards and mice sold to businesses for conference rooms but never received wide spread adoption in homes.

Where is Cuban coming from saying the internet is dead?

Finally, what are those massive HD Displaying televisions going to show without the internet? Are the cable providers going to take over all web surfing with their proprietary boxes? The answer… NO!

Currently, I already think the Cable companies have too much control over us.Giving them our entire web experience would be ludicrous and more than just a step back for the internet, it would be a step forward off a very steep cliff.
